Landmark Judgement by Supreme Court on Equal Pay

Birmingham City Council has lost its fight against an equal pay claim brought by 174 mainly female ex-employees, which could cost the employer £2 million in total back pay.
The Supreme Court learnt that the Council had not paid staff bonuses to employees in traditionally female roles, such as cleaners, carers and caterers.
The judgement is a landmark in Employment Law because it extends the time within which equal pay claims can be made to 6 years.
